Opression Depression

Rant Incoming, Brace for Bitchpact...

Okay so I'm pretty cool with where I moved to post-college. It's a little more erm... rural than NYC, but I kind of like the simplicity. At first I wasn't really bothered being the only practicioner of Islam in my entire town (to my knowledge, it's a small SMALL town though, we're talking 4 stoplights). I mean, I'm not exactly over-devout anyway. But (here it comes) I'm sick and fucking tired of 'enlightened' people telling me wearing a hijab is oppressive. I'm only peeved right now because this marks 6 times in one freaking week. Aside from how incorrect it is to call it oppressive in the first place, it's my head. I'm not making you wear it, random lady at the deli. My favorite is when someone says it offends THEM. Ya know, because they're indignant on my behalf. One person had the gall to say:

"You know, here in America, you don't have to wear that, you're free to make your own choices. No man can oppress you here."

Because we all know no person of middle eastern origin knows what western democracies are like. I just love how people assume if you do something they don't understand, it must be against your will. Like 'western protestant christian white' is the baseline and all other traits are deviations.

Wow, if I keep making screeds like this, I may as well start blogging instead of stampmaking
